The Empty Shelter

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners approved the Anti-Tethering Ordinance, and it is effective beginning August 1, 2009.
A big congratulations and thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this happen!

Our May 9 fundraiser was a great success, thanks to those who donated the great stuff and to those who bought it. We still have decorated tote bags and umbrellas for $5 each. Call Johnna at: 850-3701

The winner of our Barrington House B&B raffle is Elizabeth Riddle and the winner of the ceramic dog is Debbie Averitt. Congratulations, Ladies!

Our fence projects have been delayed because of the awful heat wave. Also, several of our active volunteers have moved away. We have four families approved and waiting for fences at this time. Hopefully, we can finish them before the August 1 "Unchaining." Call Steve at 850-1760 to volunteer for fence projects.

UCC is working closely with Animal Services to help people keep their pets during this economic crisis. We give food, shelter, rabies shots, minor medical assistance and low-cost spay and neuter to those who qualify. We need donations of just about everything for cats and dogs.

Our current project is a copper drive. We are asking for your old copper pipes, or anything else that contains copper. Proceeds will buy fences and shelter for back yard dogs.

We are already planning our Santa Paws fund raiser for this November 21, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. We are collecting coats, jackets, sweaters, boots, winter shoes, blankets, robes, just anything warm (Good condition, please). We need volunteers to collect items in their neighborhoods and from their friends. We will have someone pick up the items. Call Shelby at: 425-0967.

Several people have asked about pictures of their pet with Santa. Hopefully, a photographer will volunteer to do that for us at our Santa Paws fund-raiser on November 21.

We will also have baked goods and crafts. For more information or to donate (pledge) baked goods or crafts call Edith at: 531-4255

We always need donations of money, fencing tools and supplies, insulated dog houses, travel kennels, chain link kennels, food, treats and nylon collars, yard sale items... And volunteers!!!

Thank you so much for every call, every card, and every donation. Without YOU, we are out of business!

Shelby Townsend, Director
